30 Days of Tying – Recap!

I’m forgoing this week’s Thursday Tunes! Instead, I figured it is about time that I write up a recap of 30 Days of Tying! When I thought of the idea, I wasn’t even sure if I could finish it. The chance of failure was pretty high, but the idea fascinated me. To be honest, I’m blown away by the response!

I would be lying if I said that I got through this whole thing without help. Ian helped me out by hooking me up with materials when possible. Austin helped me figure out the patterns that would be fun to tie (and was a huge help in encouraging me along the way). Dave pushed me to keep going even when I was traveling and tired. I suppose that it took a village!

Now for some fun numbers:

7 spools of UTC thread

5 Bucktails

8 Bags of Senyo’s Laser Dub

About a gallon of Clear Cure Goo

Over 50 CCG eyes

A few dozen Fish Skulls

As hard as this whole thing has been, I would do it again in a heartbeat. It pushed me. There were SO many patterns that I have never even seen in real life, much less tied. Now, there are some patterns that I particularly loved. Namely, all of the Streamer Saturday flies were awesome. I liked the Tailer Tuesday flies because they were SO different from my normal warm water and trout stuff.

So where am I going to go from here? Well…I’m going to get back to tying eventually. I am going to do a series of posts after Christmas about how I am going to re-organize my fly tying materials. My desk is a disaster and my organization is terrible. It needs some serious thought! After I finish that, I am going to do another 30 Days of Tying in April! This time it will be nothing but articulated trout meat. I have about half of the patterns planned out already, but I am open to ideas! Drop me a note and let me know who your favorite tiers are, what patterns of theirs do you like, and maybe send along a picture of the fly hanging from the mouth of a fish!

  1. Justin,

I think you did a fantastic job and I really enjoyed seeing what you tied everyday. Even before your 30 days of tying I always checked your blog. It is a fun read, keep it up!
